Your backflow device is a critical part of your plumbing system that stops your water from being contaminated by outside factors.

They are the reason you get clean drinking water from your taps every single time. 

As the name suggests, these devices are installed to prevent the water in your lines from flowing in the wrong direction.

This helps stop your water from being contaminated by sewage, stormwater or any other brackish water that can make you unwell.

In some cases, the backflow prevention device is built into your water metre, but for properties with a water metre that is 25mm or larger, you will be required to have a standalone backflow prevention device.

It is also vital that these devices are inspected and tested by a certified plumber at least annually to ensure they are working correctly and there is no danger of your water being contaminated.

Signs That Your Backflow Prevention Devices Need Repairs

It is possible for your backflow prevention to fail before your annual service and you must know the signs to look out for.

Discoloured Water: If your water supply has become contaminated then the flow coming from your taps could be brown, yellow or even pink (the colour of potassium permanganate, which is used to treat water systems).

Slow Water Supply: Contamination could lead to blockages in your pipes and issues with your backflow could result in water going in the wrong direction, which will lead to slow water flow or no water supply at all.

Visible Contamination: If you can see rust or sediment in your water, you should not drink it or bathe in it. Call a plumber immediately.

A Sulphur Smell: The smell of rotten eggs could indicate the presence of harmful bacteria.
