Why Is My Water Bill Higher Than Usual?

January 12, 2023

A high water bill is worrying for homeowners, renters and commercial property owners because of the financial cost and the indication that precious water may be going to waste. If you see an increase in your bill, it's important to locate and correct the problem quickly. Ahead are common signs to look for when conducting an inspection of your home or business...

Leaking Taps/Pipes

Leaking taps and pipes are regular culprits for a higher water bill. Even if the leak is small, over time a small drip can add up to massive amounts of wasted water. There are various causes for leaks, including poor installation, faulty parts, ageing fixtures, corrosion, insufficient maintenance or too much pressure on the plumbing system. Changes in temperature can also result in pipes expanding and contracting, which can lead to small leaks over time. To locate a potential leak, check all faucets and pipes in your home, paying particular attention to those that get used the most. Look for signs of dampness or mould, or any discolouration that may indicate a leak behind the walls.

Leaky Toilet

A leaky toilet is another common reason for an increase in your water bill. This can be a result of low water pressure, a faulty flushing mechanism, incorrect installation, worn out rubber seals, cracks in the porcelain or other parts that need replacing. In some cases, a leaky toilet may indicate an issue with the sewer line or even the water supply itself. A toilet leak can often be identified by listening closely for the sound of running water in the tank or bowl or looking for signs of water pooling on the floor.

Leaking Fixtures

Leaking fixtures are relatively easy to spot, often requiring nothing more than a simple visual check to identify any problems. Check your dishwasher, washing machine, shower head and faucets for dripping or other signs of leakage.

Hot Water System Leakage

A hot water system may also be the cause of an increased water bill due to issues with the pipes or seals, or a faulty temperature pressure relief valve, which is designed to release pressure when the system becomes overloaded. To check for leaks, examine the pipework for signs of moisture or visible damage.

Water Wasting Habits

Developing bad water wasting habits is a sure way to up your bill over time. Instead, make sure you've adopted the following into your lifestyle where possible:

  • Wait for full laundry loads when using your washing machine, rather than completing cycles that are only half- or quarter-fille
  • Avoid overwatering your lawns & gardens
  • Keep showers under five minutes
  • Turn off water while brushing teeth or shaving
  • Use a full sink to wash dishes instead of a continually running tap
  • Mediate the use of recreational toys or equipment that consume water
